Indirect H.E. pinning and morale. Empty Indirect H.E. pinning and morale.

Thu Jun 06, 2024 7:55 pm
Hi All

Coming back to the game after starting playing a couple of games before covid. I have a couple of questions which we had the other day.

2 80mm Mortars fire on a unit of 10 infantry behind bocage. The infantry unit is the only target within 10" of the aiming point. The mortars throw one direct hit and 3 Pinning hit. So taking the direct hit first, the unit was lucky and only took 1 casualty (we played a cover save of a 5, bocage usually a 4). They took a morale test and failed on a 2 and became pinned. They now have to take 3 pinning tests? they failed 2 of them 1 on a 3 and 1 on a 1.

Questions.
1: Did we get the save value correct?
2: Having failed the pinning tests does the unit rout?
3: Or does to rout only on the failed pinning test of 1?
4: If the unit had not taken casualties from the direct hit would it have routed due to the 2 failed pinning tests>
5 if both the pinning tests had been a 4. Would it still rout?

This was the only thing we really struggled with.
Thanks for any replies

My understanding is as follows:
After the pin from the direct hit only cover save fails on 1 has any meaning - 1 dude dies, nothing else.

Hi!
I agree with Toniwa
To be more specific, the following are my rules interpretation for each single question
1: Did we get the save value correct? Yes - not sure thi is from official rules but in my group we consider the covering effect of a linear obstacle (wall, edge/bocage, improvised barricades, etc) only if the obstacle is between the target and the artillery shot impact point
2: Having failed the pinning tests does the unit rout? No,  either if you are speaking of the morale test caused by the effects of direct hit, because the unit was not previously pinned or under 50% strenght, or  for the effect of one of the pinning hits
3: Or does to rout only on the failed pinning test of 1? No, rout is only as for reply at pt 2. above
4: If the unit had not taken casualties from the direct hit would it have routed due to the 2 failed pinning tests> No, fail a pinning test for suppressing fire result only in became pinned ( and to take a loss if the cover save d6 = 1) no morale test required anyway
5 if both the pinning tests had been a 4. Would it still rout? No, as said above, suppressing fire may never cause a route result, this can only be caused by an aimed fire/diret hit attack

Hope this can help
