Stalingrad in the Fall
Tue Jun 05, 2018 6:23 pm
After about 5-6 years of rolling it around in my head, I think I've finally figured out how to do a really good looking city board. One of the things *I* think city boards often struggle with is in tying the different pieces together. And I think I've finally figured out a way around it.... Lots and Lots of Rubble.....
So first step was to make about 10 lbs of rubble (aka - spraypainted cat litter) and then do some testing... And last night I started work on my Novus Designs 15mm terrain.....
Here's a test piece with the rubble...
And to tie it all together, a giant tub of rubble....

Looking rubbly! Did you spray paint different batches---brick, concrete, etc?

I did... I've got Red, Brick Red, White, Gray, and of course the natural color of the cat litter. About 40-50% of each sprayed batch ends up taking color - so don't buy bright blue cat litter unless you want that to be the base.
Here's a link to the tutorial I posted on the FB group : https://www.facebook.com/groups/237995539700701/permalink/962764783890436/

So here is the first building on the table plus a second I knocked out last night... I'm not super happy with the green section on the second building so I'll probably go in and touch that up a bit... but otherwise I'm pretty happy with how they look on the tabel.

They look great! One thought is to wash them with streaks of black to represent smoke from fire/explosions.

So here's day 3. Just did some corner pieces.... One thing I have learned is that when using the Flames of War cobblestone roads, I have been elevating the building pieces so they are at least level with the street... Otherwise, the street looks higher and it seems off.

In answer to the earlier question about a tutorial.... Not really, but in truth it's as simple as buy some cheap cat litter, put it in a shallow tray, and then spray paint it. Give the tray a shake and spray again... I do this till it's mostly the color I'm looking for.... I used, brick red, white, and gray for mine.... then dump it all in a big tub and you're all set. You won't get total coverage, but you'll get enough coverage out of each batch that it looks good on the table.

I really like that look, I'll be stealing that idea when I put my Stalingrad board together!
