Urban assault - 750pts FotR game
Sun Apr 08, 2018 9:16 am
During the last few weeks I have been collecting, building and painting an urban gaming table. Finally had the opportunity to defend it against a group of very angry russians last weekend.
Overview of the terrain.
My german defenders included two Volksgrenadier platoons, a Jagdpanther, wirbelwind, som offtable mortars, an 88 and some defences.
The russian attackers brought ontable mortars, fieldguns, infantry with smg’s and rifles, a T-34 platoon and a very big gun on tracks!
Defences were placed with me trying to block one side of the table from his armored units and forcing them to go through the other side were my AT-units were concentrated.
MG on overwatch for enemy flanking missions.
Closeup of the defensive line
Heavy MG hidden in a ruined building.
88mm gun in defensive position far behind the first line of defence.
The russians advance cautiously towards the waiting germans. First calling upon their guns and morters to soften up the german lines.
First russian advance crept slowly across the tracks.
Russian observers used the largely undamaged building close to their lines to spot prime targets for the artillery.
But the germans were expecting this, and had planned the demolition of the building. This took out an FAO, a Artillery observer and a lone sniper.
An excellent demolition blew even the rubble skyhigh!
This loss of officers gave the russian infantry the courage to get in the fight and begin their march towards the facist enemy!
[
Other higlights from the game includes the russians drawing two air chits and successfully calling upon them to support the battle. However an IL-2 armed with 8 rockets did not manage a single hit on the german Wirbelwind and the other IL-2 was perpetually pinned for the rest of the game.
The rocketless IL-2 did however manage to kill a german mortar-team before heading home for resupply.
The russian heavy artillery was also called upon during the game. Although it managed to hit several targets, it did not do much damage.
It managed to remove two structure points from a house close to the german line, but a T-34 had to load HE and finish the job.
All rubble was again blown skyhigh!
A sneaky german Pzshreck team with a reserve move order also surprised two T-34’s that had forgotten to bring along infantry support.
The game ended with the russians abandoning the assault and properly calling upon even more heavy artillery to remove the stubborn german defenders!
German MG-fire and a low amount of orders available to the russian attackers gave the defenders the edge they needed to keep the russians at bay!
Very close battle with the germans having drawn 32 against a BR of 33!

Very nice AAR. Sneaky to prepare that house for demolition, very sneaky.

Great game with lots of cool "cinematic moments."
I love the pic of the two dead T-34s - dead unsupported armour in ruined cities seems a recurring theme in photos of 20th and 21st century warfare! You'd think the officers of the world would learn this lesson at some point?

very effective and nice looking table. Always a trouble with FIBUA, not too many buildings, very well balanced table. Bravo

Thanks for the kind words.
I plan to add something to the Plaza in the middle of the table, but I have not yet found the right piece. Currently it is a deathtrap for anyone daring to venture into such a huge open space.
I am also looking for rubble to scatter around roads and ruins, when the city has been set up. Any recommendations for finished rubble?

We used to cut GW spures into bits, mixing them with paint and PVA glue.
After putting little piles on plasticcard we let them dry for several days and drybrush them. Pherhaps I can make a picture the next days.

yeah.. guinea pig litter if you are lazy for bricks, with all you can find as additional rubble.
more subtle touch check diorama débris, they sells moulds for cobbelstones and bricks which are splendid..

Yes. This is all Terrain 4 Games buildings. I purchased the small city set and buildings set III for this. As well as some streetlights.
Cutting up sprues and some of the MDF-frames from the buildings could be an easy way to make rubble. Not sure if I will base it though, since I want it to scattered all around the battlefield.
