Mortar gun type
Mon Apr 19, 2021 8:07 pm
Hey guys,
just joined the forum and new to the system.
Here my question:
What type of guns are mortars?
Is a medium mortar a medium gun and a heavy mortar a heavy gun?
Couldn´t find it yet. Thx!

Welcome on board!
As described on pg. 33 of the hardcover BG rulebook, mortars are classified as follow:
Light mortars: very light HE, NO indirect fire, range 5" - 20", can move and fire in the same turn (max range is amended to up to 30" as per BG FAQ and Rule Clarifications v.1.00 (link to downloadable pdf file)
Medium mortars: light HE, indirect fire ONLY (spotter needed), range 10" - 90", can move and fire in the same turn and count as very ligt guns for movement purposes;
Heavy mortars: light HE (yes, the same of medium mortars!), indirect fire ONLY (spotter needed), range 15" - 240", can move and fire in the same turn and count as medium guns for movement purposes.
More infos (HE rating and AP value are also on page 33) are in the specific Gun Sections of the Army Lists Weapons/Vehicles descriptions
Hope this helps
Max

Thank you, that helps a lot!
Does that mean a spotter calls in mortar fire and the mortars can move (rotate) and open fire? but only one shot then?
Does this count for on halftrack mounted mortars too?
And for suppressing fire the mortars count as the same guns as for moving?
Sorry for asking a lot of questions!

Sorry mate!
I forget to go deep in the BG FAQ and Rule Clarifications v.1.00 sentences, missing to keep note of this amendment:
So only light mortars are entitled to move and fire (best used for Area/Suppressing Fire as Very Light HE)
I can't find a specific rule on vehicle mounted mortars... IMHO they are treated the same as the normal ones, being capable only of Indirect Fire called by a spotter
For Suppressing/Area Fire mortars are classified either as Very Light HE (light mortars) or Light HE (medium and heavy mortars)... equivalency to guns in move terms is another matter
Another thred about mortars that can be useful is in this topic (linked)
Whit regard

Move and Fire: Light mortars and all MGs may Move & Fire. There is a cut and paste error in the rules / Dispatches about medium mortars being able to move and fire. They are IDF weapons and need a spotter and Open Fire orders to fire so may not move and fire. wrote:
