The road to Paris Empty The road to Paris

Sun Jun 30, 2019 5:32 am
A change of flavor (actually garlic & onions) from our usual fare was a scenario with two French columns withdrawing West across a river closely followed by advanced elements of a Wehrmacht panzer division; the primary  objective for the French was to cross the river and establish a defensive line to halt the German armor before German engineers could come up and build another bridge and outflank the entire position.

Turn one had a German motorcycle reconnaissance platoon taking some high ground overlooking the river crossing and withdrawing French troops, but some quick and accurate shooting from a French 81mm mortar battery caused casualties and forced the motorcycle troops to dismount and go to ground where they engaged and wiped out a French squad with small arms fire.  The French had superior numbers however and in  hail of return fire, the kradschutzen troopers were forced to retreat leaving three of their number KIA

Elated by this success, the French gunners the proceeded to drop a barrage on their own tanks crossing the bridge.  TWICE!  Fortunately these were Char B1's and only pinned instead of being knocked out!  German armored cars quickly dispatched the old Renault FT 17's at the rear of the second French column while their own light tanks came on at top speed and threw themselves at the stalled armor on the bridge.  The panzer 1's and 2's were predictably badly mauled: more firepower was needed!  The main body of the German force was now on the field, and the British RAF attempted to intervene in the shape of a Fairey Battle light bomber (cunningly disguised as a Spitfire), which barreled in at low altitude, shrugging off 20mm Flak fire,  but all four bombs missed the target by a country kilometre.....

Gathering dusk meant the battle was over, and comparing remaining BR Points, it was a minor German victory.
