Aimed fire to hit (tanks/atg's etc) Empty Aimed fire to hit (tanks/atg's etc)

Just had second game, which we think we got basically right and all enjoyed immensely. A point was made which made us wonder if we are missing something. The aimed AP fire to hit (H.E. table as well) tables give the appropriate rolls required in 10" increments. What we cannot see is any adjustment for longer calibre guns which give better accuracy.

Best illustration is look up German guns,/page 135 of core rules, and go down to the Light Guns table. This lists the 75L24 to the 75mmL70. You can clearly see the L70 is superior to the L24 . What we could not identify is anything to reflect the enhanced accuracy of L70. So it seems at 30" to 40" the L24 has the same chance at hitting a target as the L70.

Hopefully we have got this right, but would just like some clarification. If we have interpreted this correctly then we maybe looking at a "house rule" (not a fan of these as they have a habit of distorting rules). Simply a 1+ for L50+ just to reflect the better stability of the round in flight. Would be interested in any thoughts on this.
Regards

Mike

No, there is no extra to hit bonus for any particular gun. That would tend to skew things a lot since a +1 on a D6 makes a huge difference, plus these rules aren't so granular that they would benefit from that sort of detail. Better guns get a better chance of penetrating at range and I believe that is bonus enough. If you feel that strongly about it, pay the points for Panzer Ace for that gun and get the +1 that way. It will end up costing a fair few points and you'll probably find that on the whole it isn't worth it.

Pretty much what he said. I would like to also add, Don't look at the modifiers in the game for range as being a mechanical aspect of the weapons, but as the abilities of the gunner/crew. Having to see through smoke, dust, weather or what ever fits the narrative.

Thanks guys. The main thing is we were getting it right. As I said I am not a big fan of house rules for reasons already stated. I have got to say though if you saw the appallingly bad die rolling on both sides in our game you might have given us a plus 1 anyway!
We are hoping to lay on a Normandy demo game at a D Day commemorative event at Pontypridd during the summer using Battlegrroup rules, hence need to clarify some details.

Thanks again,

Mike

You had it right Mike. The nature of these rules (and what makes them work so well) is the inherent simplicity - pick up and play factor without wading through endless charts and tables; also the realism! If you try to nickel & dime bonuses and modifiers for each individual weapon system and circumstance, you end up with a virtually unplayable nightmare out of the 1980's Wink

Love to see an AAR and photos of your big Overlord game! Are you doing the beach assault too? We ran the 'Bloody Omaha' scenario over a couple of weekends last year, a very interesting experience.
