Rocket Launcher
Mon Aug 13, 2018 11:15 am
Hi there.
A call for help to those more knowledgeable on the subject of artillery pieces.
I am planning an artillery purchase for my expanding german force and came across the "howling cow" rocket launcher on the vendor's webpage. Trouble is, I don't know much about WWII weaponry and the product reference only gives it the common name as mentioned above.
I was looking through the artillery section on my BG books but could not find any mention to it. Is the weapon an in-game option? I did see nebelwerfer rocket launchers, but no mention of a "howling cow" artillery piece.
Thanks in advance for the help
Regards

The real name of the thing is the "Wurfrahmen" (litt. launching frame), it was a large calibre multi purpose rocket that was often mounted on Sd.Kfz. half tracks or on captured French vehicles. It's also called "Stuka zu Fuß" (Stuka on foot) unofficially.

Yey! Many thanks for the fast reply.
Later today I'll browse again the army lists to see if I find any reference to those names.

BG:Overlord, Beyond the Beaches and Fall of the Reich have a couple lists with the Wurfrahmen, but I don't know for the other ones, since I don't have them (I do have other BG rule sets, but they're early war-oriented, while the Wurfrahmen is late war kit)

Wurfrahmen is available since Barbrossa. So, it is listed in the Barbrossa BG Book

Oh, okay, sorry. I'm not the biggest expert of German stuff, and since I mostly saw the Wurfrahmen on 1944 Normandy pics, I figured it was a late war thing and didn't look for it in the Barbarossa book.

Hi Kirill
I suspect 'howling cow' is a monicker associated with the Warsaw Rising of 1944 ('bellowing cow' would be a more accurate translation). Although mostly associated with the Schweres Wurfgerat 41 in Wurfrahmen mounted on SdKfz 251 or 'Stuka zu Fuss' (probably thanks to a well-used photograph) I am fairly sure the insurgents weren't that picky and the term was applied to any German rocket-propelled projectile. Although mostly reserved for railway mortar projectiles, the term 'szafa' (wardrobe/cabinet) was on occasion applied to rockets as well. In desperate situations, a sense of humour becomes indispensable....

Many thanks for all the replies and information
I did find the entry under self-propelled artillery pieces. Could not find the entry for a stationary battery of said rockets, so better invest on the SDKFZ borne version of it.
