Flammpanzers in Normandy
Fri Mar 09, 2018 2:50 pm
Greetings. Does anybody know of Flammpanzer iii units in Normandy 44? According to this forum (https://forum.axishistory.com//viewtopic.php?f=47&t=6507&p=87186&hilit=Flammpanzer+III#p87186 ) there weren't any. However, Tim Saunders has British divisional history accounts in his Operation Epsom book specifically referring to 'two flame thrower tanks' attacking 6 Royal Scots Fusiliers at Château Grainville; an area where 9SS Panzer were engaged.
One possibility is that these flame tanks were converted Char Bs, but I'm not aware of the SS having these either. Also Saunders uses an image of a Flammpanzer iii to support the text, with reference to their new lives as flame tanks.
Any ideas? Ta!

Don't recall any Flammpanzer on any returns for Normandy.
Could it be Sdkfz 251/16s?

One if his books also shows a Ram Kangaroo in reference to a TCV which is simply a Bedford QLT lorry. I agree with Piers that these tanks were in fact Sdkfz 251/16 halftracks.

Thanks both. What threw me was that the reference to 'tanks' comes from quoted material from 15 Div's official history. That, of course, might also be mistaken!

Anything with tracks is a tank... even to those writing war diaries. only wargamers use proper names...

Unit diaries refer to Ferdinands in Normandy went they were Jagdpanthers. Obviously They were written by Wargamers at least not rivet counting ones.

Well a period documentary film I watched the other night on Torch stated 52 Tigers had been destroyed in the fighting in Tunisia... It was made in 1943 so I gave them the benefit of the doubt...

I remember on another forum, reading a lovely anecdote from some chap asking a Veteran 'Did he see any Tigers during the war?'
He responded "Son, to me they were all Tigers."
