Scenario 3 'Ludemann's Hunting Panthers'

on Sun Sep 16, 2018 12:22 pm
Hi Guys

A quick query...
Canadian Forces
Being as there is no FOO (Forward Observation Officer (Artillery Spotter)), and the Infantry Platoon and both Sherman Troops Officers are Mortar Spotters (not Artillery Spotters), who spots for the Off-Table 105mm Battery?

You don't need an observer to fire at a pre-registered target.

Very true my American friend.
But that restricts the guns to just one point. Once the Germans see where that is, they'll move around it.
After all, the table in the scenario is 4ft (48 inches or in metric 1.2 metres) wide.
I know that if I had a Bty of guns, they would be used to fire at ANY point I can hit Germans (or other enemies).

PS. Hope the storm hasn't affected you, and you are safe

Totally safe, thanks! Only medium winds and a ton of rain here.

I think that even if you can only hit one point on the table it's pretty darn effective. If it cuts the enemy's zone of attack from 48" to 28" I think the defender can set himself up to exploit that quite effectively. And if you happen to pin some units in the beaten zone you can keep clobbering them until you roll some good direct hits and they'll be toast. So I think those guns, while limited, are plenty worthwhile.

Glad you're ok.

I'd, personally, would still like to shift the guns around (being ex-Royal Artillery)

I find harassment fire useful in this instance. And that's when I roll a bunch of 6's!

Paul:

You can make one of the officers an artillery spotter if you feel it would add fun and both opponents agree.
Nothing is written in stone.
And, yes, I concur with Jerry, a PRT is a nasty asset. A huge part of the battlefield negated.
