5th Royal Tank Regiment

on Fri Apr 06, 2018 11:23 am
I need info about 5th RTR in late war period (Normandy to Ren). What tanks/vehicles were used by this regiment? I know that Cromwells. A30 Challenger too? 5th RTR used Universal Carriers? Maybe any others units of 22ed Armoured Brigade used Universal Carriers?

I need sources if it possible (books, photos, links to web, etc.). "The Tank War" Mark Urban I know Smile BBC two-part documentary film too.

Many thanks for help Smile

Sherman Firefly was used by the armoured regiments of 22nd Armoured Brigade. The brigade did have 2 Challengers in Normandy for evaluation purposes but I don't recall which individual regiment. Other vehicle used was the Stuart V or M3A3 many of which were jalopied by removal of the turret. There were 11 in the Recce Troop of each regiment. The only unit of the brigade which used Carriers in any number was the motor battalion. Each motor company had a scout troop in carriers. In Normandy standard practice was to attach one company to each armoured regiment. Later the whole battalion was paired with one regiment and the others with a battalion from the lorried infantry brigade.

To the above, you may wish to add further organic support vehicles. For instance, the battalion would also have Cromwell ARVs (1 per squadron?) and possibly bulldozer tanks. The other armoured divisions had Sherman dozers, but I'm not sure what was the case with 7AD.

I'm not sure whether 22nd AB had CS Cromwells in HQ troops, but divisional armoured recce battalions did, at a rate of two per HQ troop. EDIT: according to this PDF below, each squadron would have two CS tanks, usually in HQ troop.

Also note that, in battle, a squadron might well have an artillery observer from elsewhere in hte division in a Sherman with a dummy gun. There is a picture of one of these brewed up in Villers Bocage.

With the carriers, you may want to pimp them up with .50s. Again, pictures from Villers Bocage suggest that they were thus armed.

This breakdown of all British armoured brigades during the Second World War may be of use:

See page 14 for 22nd AB.

Yes they did have CS and ARV Cromwells

Bulldozer tanks were introduced quite late in UK armoured regiments about April 45 iirc.

Doms Decals is the only producer I know of the combined markings used by the brigade.

He currently has a huge backlog of orders and I certainly don't intend to place any further orders with him until I know this has cleared. Product is excellent though.

Thanks, Hmmm yes I've tried that before, didn't even know my order was received and it takes so long it gets close to not being able to claim back funds.

NTM is correct about the Doms decals situation. Many TMP members are frustrated at the lack of full filled orders and he's not responding to E Mails. I did send him an E mail just to see how he was and if he had caught up.p but hasnt replied to it it, So buyer be aware comes to mind here at the moment.

I had to file a claim via PayPal about Dom as he never sent me my order. A pity as his product is excellent.
