BG:NORTHAG Playtest Rules, Lists and more... (now with East German Paramilitary Battlegroup List!)

on Tue Feb 13, 2018 1:25 am
With the death of "The Guild" some of you may have lost access to the BG:NORTHAG playtest rules I had been working on with input from Warwick and Piers.  Whilst a fair amount of work has gone into this already from all three of us, it should also be considered very much the beginning of the project - a real work-in-progress that everyone can now have input into.  I imagine in the future you may find some elements cut from this version of the rules, some changed and new sections added where required.

I will try to keep all the information in this thread as up to date as I can, based on feedback and other decisions.  Everything will be here and on my blog https://coldwarhot.blogspot.com.au/

So please have a crack at these rules and let us know in this section of the forum what you think.  Any commentary/feedback/suggestions will be looked at and considered.  This really is a chance to positively influence BG:NORTHAG.

Thanks

Richard

System won't let me add any links for 7 days...

Google search "Cold War Hot Hot Hot" and it should come up.

@ Richard:
We had 3 questions for you as we played our second game of the current edition of the rules today.
1) We pulled an aircraft chit for the Russians and rolled up a Frogfoot with 2 AAMs with a heavy autocannon (Gatling?) #6 on the chart. We could not find any penetration values for that weapon or even any for Nato either. Do we use the weapons off the AFV list? We got the part about upping the penetration table by 4 lines!
2) Are the points and armor reversed for the T64 and T72? T72 has higher armor than the T64 and is cheaper in points. Wasn't the T72 the export model and less armored than the Russian Army's home tank, the T64? We accessed some armor books and this seems to be the right information we have.
3) We have allowed ATGM's to fire using the Ambush Fire order that may be contrary to what you have written. I haven't downloaded your rules yet as my gaming buddy has, so if this wrong I apologize. If so, can they attempt to fire again on Ambush fire if they failed to spot the first time? We said no because it's not like a regular type of shot due to the rocket being launched and the time it takes to being guided there ( This was a FAGGOT on a BMP by the way) Any thoughts?
Thanks for your time and efforts with these rules, Richard!
Respectfully,
Gunny

Hi Gunny

We could not find any penetration values for that weapon or even any for Nato either. Do we use the weapons off the AFV list? We got the part about upping the penetration table by 4 lines!
I'll try and make that clearer in the future, but yes, use the weapons off the AFV charts - in this case the 30mm 2A42. Most NATO planes should have the equivalent of the 20mm Vulcan Gatling Gun. Needs more testing as we've mostly just dropped cluster bombs on things!

2) Are the points and armor reversed for the T64 and T72? T72 has higher armor than the T64 and is cheaper in points. Wasn't the T72 the export model and less armored than the Russian Army's home tank, the T64? We accessed some armor books and this seems to be the right information we have.
I've had another look and I think the points costs do need some rejigging and I will do so in the next update of the Soviet lists. Don't forget that the crap T-72 tanks exported by Russia were not the same as the T-72s used by the Soviets, which had better armour, sights etc. I'll have a re-read of my books and have another look at the armour values.

I have no issue with a ATGM using the Ambush Fire order. However they only get one chance to spot as the "Shoot & Track" order takes up two activations. So if you don't observe the target - bad luck. I think that reflects the reality of the situation quite well. So I think you played it correctly.

Hope all that was of some help

I would like the criteria you used to stat the helicopters as I would like to add a few more to your lists like the uh1 DuH. As well as a few others like CH 46, CH53 etc.

The helo stats in the main rules are just a sample. I have the stats for all the helos you mention and many more that will be posted up in the next week or two.

Thanks

Hi there,

A friend and I were looking for the stats for the LAV 25 and couldn’t find them. I’m imagining they’re similar to the M2 Bradley minus the TOW, maybe a little faster?

Thanks for any information,

Will there be French Units in your list. I know they left Nato 67, but they had Troops in Germany the whole Coldwar.

Hi Rich

On the QRS (pg 2) the 'Observation Table' lists Obscured Infantry twice (4+ and 2+).
I take it that the 2+ should be ATGM Team firing.
